Chinese celebrate the harvest month, known as the Mid-Autumn or Lantern Festival, on the full moon of the eight lunar month. This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on 12 September 2011.
There are many background stories and legends relating to the Mid-Autumn Festival dating back over 3,000 years. Today, we celebrate the occasion by coming together with family members for reunion dinner and moon gazing far into the night while savouring mooncakes and chinese tea. It is said that the moon is at its fullest and brightest on this day, signifying completeness and abundance of harvest.
Mooncake is the favoured delicacy as just like the moon, its round shape symbolizes “tuan-yuan” or reunion on this happy occasion. Nalanda Book Cafe is offering mooncakes from Foh San confectionary for this celebration.
